Professional Teaching Goals

Stepping out of a professional program and into that profession is a daunting prospect, for anyone. I've had the privilege of having half a foot in the teaching profession during my time spent in Korean classrooms, which has given me confidence to stand in front of the class with a lesson plan written down on a napkin. I know that's not the most productive way of teaching, but sometimes you have to do what you can.

In writing down my future goals as a teacher, I've been staring at this screen unable to come up with something beyond, "I hope my students feel safe in my classroom to be themselves and learn to the best of their abilities." I also hope to get more comfortable with screen sharing and being the host of a zoom and/google meets meeting, as I feel those are both skills that will come in hand in the current teaching climate.

As a professional, I look forward to work with colleagues whom have had and been successful in the field. I'm excited to be a part of a community that is constantly learning from each other. I am considering applying to the Mentoree, to be a part of a network of teachers helping teachers. Where I land next year, I am also looking forward to perhaps being part of teacher social clubs. My practicum school has been hosting bookclub meetings throughout the year, with a focus on anti-racist literature, which is a subject that I plan to extensively keep myself updated and informed on. I also would like to have time in my professional development to read more about learning theories and pedagogical development.

In terms of formal professional development, I would eventually like to apply for the following additional qualifications (AQ) and additional basic qualifications (ABQ):

  • Health and Physical Education

  • Inclusive Classrooms

  • Primary Education

  • Teaching LGBTQ Students

  • Teaching English Language Learners

Overall I think much of my professional development will come from being in a classroom, making mistakes and learning from them, and setting myself up to be able to ask questions of those around me.
