FRIENDSHIP

BRACELETS

IN THE CLASSROOM

"According to indigenous tradition, the recipient of a friendship bracelet must wear it until the cords wear out and fall off naturally. The idea is that the friend paid for it with the hard work and love that made it, and the recipient repays the friend by honouring the work."

History

Histoy

What is often viewed as a quintessential past time to any summer camp worth its salt, tying knots to create woven jewelry has a history that goes beyond children with skinned knees exchanging friendship bracelets.

Knot craft and hand weaving has been an art that can be traced back in the archaeological record to prehistoric times all over the world. Knots have been used as mathematical tools, for creating nets, for religious rituals, and as a form of decorative art, and while the materials used for knotting often doesn’t physically survive the test of time, reference to knotwork has been found in written record as well.

In modern history, friendship bracelets can be traced to South America, where the colourful thread wrapped around wrists and ankles took on a political meaning, as part of a social movement protest. The making of friendship bracelets as gifts most likely originated in Central America, where the bracelets were given as a symbol of friendship.  In some traditions, the friendship bracelet is worn until it naturally falls off, honouring the work the artist put in making it.

Curriculum Connections

Curriculum Connections

While my interest in making friendship bracelets comes from a nostalgic place, since presenting how to making the bracelets to my cohort, I have reflected on ways that the craft can be used in the curriculum to benefit the Junior student.

  • An obvious benefit is the fine motor skills that students use when tying the intricate knots. Students practice positioning their fingers, and being aware of their fingers while they manipulate the strings. To make this easier for younger learners whose fine motor skills are still developing, thicker string or yarn can be used.

  • As with many art projects, colour is an important part of creating the friendship bracelets. Using thread as a medium, students can start to learn about colour theory and how different colours work with each other.

  • In an EFL classroom a lesson on friendship bracelets, verbs such as “tie,” “knot,” “pull,” “cross,” “create,” and others can be taught. Students can also practice reading and listening to simple sentences.

  • The history of friendship bracelets and knot crafts can be taught alongside students creating a friendship bracelet. Here, students can begin to learn about cultures that might be different from their own and how art is represented in different ways.

  • Finally, this activity lends itself to students cooperating with each other. Some students might catch on faster than others and strategic table grouping would encourage the students to help each other out. Further, as we discovered in our PED 3114 class, this can be a low energy exercise and the repetitive motions inspire a sense of calm. Tying knots, even those that don’t make an aesthetically pleasing bracelet, can be an activity done with those students who need to focus their excessive energy somewhere.
