Teacher Candidate, 2021

About Me
My name is Jayme Fouillard and I'm a University of Ottawa Teacher Candidate. I'm from Calgary, AB originally, and up until August 2019, had never been to Ontario-- apart from one unfortunate layover in the Toronto airport.
This isn't the first time I've waded into the unknown for school, as I did my undergrad in a small university town in Nova Scotia, and took a bunch of history classes while I was figuring out what anthropology-- my original degree declaration-- was. After a four-year long search to understand what made Halifax donairs so special, I eventually graduated with a joint degree of History-and-Anthropology, and that took me to a southern province in South Korea. I taught English as a foreign language for two years, while travelling Asia and appreciating the different cultures and food, and dealing with homesickness by watching hockey. I worked in both middle and elementary schools, with students ranging from three-to-fourteen years old, who probably taught me just as much as I tried to teach them. I eventually returned home to Calgary, bringing with me a nasty case of reverse culture shock, some weird facts about K-Pop, and a renewed interest in getting my teaching degree here in Canada.
To the urban communities cohort, I hope to bring a never-ending love of learning, a sense of adventure (for what bigger adventure is there than teaching?), a habit of overusing commas and run-on sentences, and everything substantial that I learned from my anthro-degree: do no harm. I hope to carry that idea into teaching.
