Grade 6 Social Studies: The United Nations

The following is a Grade 6 Social Studies lesson on the United Nations.

These lessons and activities are meant to meet the following expectations with Strand B People and Environments: Canada's Interactions with the Global Community in the Ontario Grade 6 Social Studies curriculum:

B1. Application: explain the importance of international cooperation in addressing global issues, and
evaluate the effectiveness of selected actions by Canada and Canadian citizens in the international
arena
B2. Inquiry: use the social studies inquiry process to investigate some global issues of political, social,
economic, and/or environmental importance, their impact on the global community, and responses
to the issues
B3. Understanding Context: describe significant aspects of the involvement of Canada and Canadians
in some regions around the world, including the impact of this involvement

The lesson and activities have been designed to take 3-4 days or classes. Each lesson begins with a Google slides story that breaks down the history of the U.N. into a story. Following the presentation, students are given a prompt for their Social Studies Journal. The cumulative task for these lessons has students designing a new flag for the U.N., bringing in curricular aspect to the lesson.. A day is built into this lesson plan to introduce students to Adobe Spark, or any other design program. The lessons were designed for and tried on my Grade 6 practicum class in January and was taught virtually and with great success.
